The discoverer of the Gold Seal was supposed to be a farmer
Jimbei of Shikanoshima because the report of the discovery was
made in his name. Recent studies however revealed that the real
finders were two Shikanoshima farmers 'Hideji' and 'Kihei.' The
old records for the Temmei 4th year at an old temple 'Kisshoji'
show that "On February
23, Hideji and Kihei of Shoji~machi were tilling the rice paddy
and discovered a gold seal under a large stone."
Also, a calligraphic document by a well~known Buddhist priest 'Sengai'
shows the seal stamped on the upper right hand with a description
that the seal was given to 'Ito' by 'Kobu' and that it was discovered
by farmers Hideji and Kihei of Shikanoshima. From these, Jimbei was the owner of the rice paddy and Hideji
and Kihei were either tenant farmers or temporarily hired to
reinforce the ditches of the paddy.
